Tropical - Fish - Pictures .com

This is a tropical fish site for all tropical fish enthusiasts from beginner to expert. It has some nice tropical fish pictures and will hopefully have something of interest for all freshwater and marine fish keepers. These tropical fish pages provide some information about some of my favourite fish, along with tropical fish pictures of them. I have kept fish for many years now, ranging from community to marine. Over this period I have been drawn towards catfish, and the cichlids, which I must confess, through there antics have become my favourites. I now keep African and American cichlids, along with some catfish and plecs.

Black Pacu

Picture of Pacu
Common namePacu, Black pacu, Black-finned pacu, Giant pacu, Tambaqui, Gamitana
Scientific nameColossoma macropomum
SynonymsPiaractus macropomus (not valid)
SizeUp to 3.3 feet (1 metre) in length and very deep bodied!
OriginAmazon
Tank setupA huge tank (e.g. 500 gallons), even this may be too small for adult pacu.
CompatibilityUsually fairly peaceful for its size, other 'tankbuster' fish can be kept - not for community tanks!
Temperature22-28oC (72-82oF)
Water chemistryNot critical: acidic to slightly alkaline pH (5.5-7.5), soft to fairly hard.
FeedingOmnivore, will eat most larger foods, include plenty of vegetable foods.
SexingThe dorsal fin of the male is more pointed, and the anal fin has a toothed edge.
BreedingUnlikely in aquaria
CommentsThis fish is really only suitable for public aquaria, many of which are already well stocked with pacu which have outgrown their homes, and may be reluctant to accept more. It is therefore not a good idea to purchase this fish unless you can provide a 1000 gallons plus aquarium for the adult(s).
